Wuji Standing

Standing Meditation

Gordon believes that it is impossible to make real progress in Taiji without practicing standing meditation.  It is the basis for building the correct foundation for the Taiji practice. First, standing practice teaches the student how to stand correctly, transferring all of his or her weight to the ground as efficiently as possible so as to reduce as much as possible holding one’s body with muscle.  Holding the body with muscle leads to being double weighted and blocking the transfer of energy.  Standing also allows the student to develop yin and yang center lines for transferring or holding energy and to experience the body in energy layers, including hair, skin, tendon, muscle, bone and bone marrow.

Diligent practice of standing brings results that are directly transferable to Taiji.  While the form teaches one how to go from movement to stillness, standing teaches going from stillness to motion.  In essence, standing is a form of chi gong and has many health and martial benefits.
